CECI offers huge opportunities to students from the developing world as they pursue their studies in journalism and communications. Recently the center became a literal life saver thanks to a CECI board member who gave ta scholarship to Narmin Elferjani, a student from Libya. Without the CECI award, Narmin, would have been unable to continue her degree. Here she tells you in her own words: In summer 2018, I went back to Libya to find a way to transfer my tuition and fees for the fall semester; however, the central bank in Tripoli would not allow any transfer. In August 2018, the civil war in Tripoli erupted, precisely in my neighbourhood . I almost gave up life I thought that death was close to me because of the sound of guns and bombs in front of my house. I was hiding under the stairs with my family and praying that I could come back to Paris and get settled because I lost hope in Libya. After two days of fear, my father decided to send me back to Paris with my brother so that they can start their classes and be safe. I left my home, my parents, and my older brother under artillery bombardment. It was such a challenging moment in my life where I had to leave my family in a dangerous situation and prove to myself that I am strong enough to help them and get settled in Paris.
After receiving CECI scholarship, Narmin managed to complete her classes and graduate on time. During the virtual celebration of class 2020 at AUP, she won an award for student service and excellence in service to others. It is remarkable that Narmin fleeing from war-torn Libya, her house bombed and family in danger has risen above her own difficulties to be seen as the one most available to help others, even though their needs are probably so less compelling than her own
Not only Narmin had influence at AUP, but also the rest of our students have the same reputation. Monique, a graduate student at AUP and a friend of our three CECI students, Prizma, Narmin, and Stella, commenting on their role in making her experience a unique one, "AUP advertises themselves as an international school where students can grow as individuals through the shared pursuit of knowledge with students from all over the world. My experience over the last two years confirms this to be true. During my time in the MAGC program I had the opportunity to meet three lovely women who have positively impacted my life by sharing their good humor and personal stories. We’ve worked together on projects, traveled with the university, and been there for each other when times were difficult. I can’t imagine how I would have managed without Stella’s jokes, Prizma’s knowledge, or Narmin’s kindness. I am so thankful that I’ve had the opportunity to know these ladies, and I suspect that we will stay friends no matter where life may take us."
